Coronavirus Update: March 2020

Hello Friends and Family,

As you know, the world has changed rapidly and has affected all of us. The coronavirus outbreak in NYC has multiplied quickly, NYSUM has shut down operations, and we were advised to leave the city on Monday, March 16th. We did not yet feel it was time to leave, so we continued to reach out to the homeless community. The opportunities were great and everyone I was able to reach out to with hope, food, and other items was most grateful.

Now, a week later and with the governor and mayor telling everyone to stay indoors, we had to make a decision. We partner with NYSUM and live on their campus. Their leadership no longer wanted me to be exposing myself to potentially bringing back the virus to our community. No one living in our building has the virus thus far, but two of the residents are in their seventies. While I would take precautions every time I left to do outreach, wearing a mask and spraying down my boots, backpack, and clothing with sanitizer upon return, even that now poses too much of a risk.

Due to these circumstances, on March 21st Naomi and I made the decision to travel back to Pennsylvania. We hope to be able to return to New York City in early April.
